Tokaido: The New Encounters is a 2012 promo set for 2–5 players, with a play time of 45 minutes. It contains four encounter cards that can be added to the encounter cards pile before shuffling.

Each card introduces a distinct opportunity during the game. These new encounters offer useful cards or victory points in exchange for a single coin—or, in one case, at no cost.

• Itamae, the itinerant cook: Get a new meal card for only one coin.
• Saru, the clean monkey: Receive a hot spring card for free.
• Kitoushi, the veteran guide: Take one panorama card of your choice for only one coin.
• Takuhatsuso, the old priest: Gain 4 victory points for only one coin.

The cards are simple to add: place them in the encounter cards pile, then shuffle before play. Their effects provide additional ways to obtain meals, hot springs, panoramas, and points while using the existing encounter system.
