About this board game
Tokyo Highway: 2 Players Version is a two-player construction game with an approximately 50-minute play time, in which opponents build elevated roadways and race to place all 10 of their cars.
Players use 66 squat cylinders to create pillars of different heights, then connect those pillars with sticks that serve as roads. Each turn, a player constructs a pillar reachable from a previous base point, builds a new road between the base point and that pillar, and may place cars on the newest road when the required conditions are met.
The central challenge is making a road cross an opponent’s road. A car may be placed when the new road crosses over an opponent’s road with no other road above it, or crosses under with no other road below it. One road can cross multiple opposing roads, allowing multiple cars to be placed at once. Roads cannot be used later to place cars, and players may not score by crossing their own roads.
- Junctions: A yellow pillar can change height by any number of stories, provided it has at least one gray pillar beneath it, and can branch the highway in two directions.
- Exits: A road safely grounded from a height-1 pillar creates an exit and awards an additional car, with further cars possible when it crosses opposing roads.
- Precision and penalties: Dropping an opponent’s car or road during construction requires handing over an equivalent number of pillars.
In Tokyo Highway, careful placement matters: once the opponent builds a new pillar, the previous pillar, road, or car can no longer be adjusted. The first player to place all 10 cars wins, while a player who runs out of construction materials can lose if the opponent completes the next turn without penalty.
