About this board game
War Stories: Red Storm is a World War II tactical wargame for 1–2 players, with battles designed to take about 60 minutes. Set during 1942–43, it puts players in command of German and Soviet tanks, armored vehicles, and infantry platoons.
Each scenario uses a map assembled with terrain overlays that regulate movement and influence combat. Players receive secret instructions containing hidden deployment information and objectives, while unit blocks display information governing their ability to move, fight, and remain cool under fire.
The system is designed to be easy to learn while keeping the action fast and realistic. Combat uses a distinctive system that avoids charts and endless modifiers, letting the terrain and unit information drive decisions on the battlefield.
- Assets: Special equipment, troops, and abilities such as machine guns, infiltration units, and mine-laying.
- Events: Unexpected developments including reinforcements, wildfire caused by a gust of wind, or a damaged vehicle suddenly brewing up.
- Scenarios: Separate German and Soviet scenario booklets provide the framework for each battle.
Asset and event cards add complexity without adding substantial rules overhead because their effects are printed directly on the cards. These “rule breaking” elements can create memorable moments while keeping the core system accessible.
War Stories: Red Storm includes five double-sided mapboards, 23 terrain overlays, 75 painted wooden blocks, 109 counters, 33 asset cards, 21 event cards, combat chips, player screens, and scenario and rule books. It is a normal two-player wargame rather than a solitaire game, despite the box listing 1–2 players.
