About this board game
Monster Mash is a children’s matching and reaction game for 2–4 players, with each game taking about 20 minutes. Released in 1987, it challenges players to identify a randomly formed monster and claim the matching card before anyone else.
The game includes 27 monster cards, four long-handled “thwacker” hands with suction cups, and a clever Monster-Maker Machine. Each monster is built from one of three sets of eyes, one of three mouths, and one of three bodies, creating a range of distinctive combinations to recognize.
To begin a round, press the button on the Monster-Maker Machine. Its three panels spin randomly and stop to display one monster. Players then scan the cards spread across the table, searching for the card that matches the machine’s result.
- Players: 2–4
- Playing time: about 20 minutes
- Contents: 27 monster cards, four suction-cup thwackers, and the Monster-Maker Machine
- Core challenge: recognize the matching monster and react quickly
When a player spots the right card, they use their thwacker to slap or “thwack” it and pick it up. The player who successfully thwacks the correct monster earns the point, while everyone else keeps hunting for the next target.
With its spinning machine, colorful monster combinations, and playful jungle-hunter theme, Monster Mash turns simple visual matching into an active table race. It is a hands-on game where quick eyes and quick thwacks can make all the difference.
