About this board game

Star Trek: The Next Generation – Interactive VCR Board Game – A Klingon Challenge is a 3–6-player, 60-minute board game in which players take the roles of the few remaining crew members aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise.

The Enterprise is docked for repairs when the renegade Klingon KAVOK hijacks the ship with only the players aboard. His plan is to use the Federation vessel to attack the Klingon Empire, provoke a Federation/Klingon war, and die gloriously in battle alongside the remaining crew.

Set the board up in view of a television and VCR, then watch a videotape featuring simulated action and narration filmed on the set of the Star Trek series. KAVOK periodically appears on the screen, presented as different communication views aboard the ship, to address the players and create new obstacles.

  • Move through the Enterprise: Roll the die and travel around the board, which represents the ship.
  • Use the cards: Draw cards as you attempt to overcome setbacks during the mission.
  • Interact with the video: Follow KAVOK’s appearances and respond to the unfolding situation.
  • Race against real time: The journey to the Klingon Empire takes 60 minutes, displayed on screen.

Your objective is to reach the bridge and regain control of the Enterprise before the countdown expires. If nobody wins in time, everyone loses, making the video-driven clock a central part of the tension.

Released in 1993, Star Trek: The Next Generation – Interactive VCR Board Game – A Klingon Challenge combines board movement, cards, filmed scenes, and a Star Trek storyline. A sequel involving Q was planned for the following year but was shelved because of licensing issues.
