About this expansion
Cacao: Volcanoes is a board game for 2–4 players with an approximately 45-minute play time, released in 2015. It adds three distinctive volcano tiles that replace the three gold mines.
Each volcano tile presents a choice through its edges. Two edges give a player 2 gold per attached worker, while the other two edges make a player pay 1 gold per attached worker. Because the outcome depends on which edges are connected to workers, volcano placement should be chosen carefully.
The volcano tiles introduce a clear balance between potential income and required payment. Players must consider how a volcano is positioned and how many workers become attached to each edge, since the same tile can provide gold on one side and require gold on another.
- Three volcano tiles replace the three gold mines.
- Two edges on each volcano give 2 gold per attached worker.
- Two edges on each volcano require payment of 1 gold per attached worker.
- The punchboard doubles as a box inlay for component storage.
Beyond the gameplay addition, the punchboard has a practical storage function. It works as an inlay inside the box, helping keep all components in place even when the box is stored upright or transported.
With its compact set of volcano tiles and edge-based gold effects, Cacao: Volcanoes focuses attention on careful placement. The result is a focused addition for players who want every attached worker and every volcano edge to matter.
