Coup: Speculator Promo

About this expansion

Coup: Speculator Promo is a promotional role for Coup, supporting 2–10 players with an approximately 30-minute play time. Released in 2015, it replaces the Duke with a character built around risk, reward, and concealed influence.

A player claiming the Speculator may use the Gamble action to take coins from the Treasury equal to the amount they currently have, up to a maximum of 5. This creates a potentially valuable opportunity, but making a successful challenge carries a serious cost.

If the Speculator is successfully challenged, any coins received through Gamble are returned to the Treasury. The first challenger then takes the active player’s remaining coins, making the role’s bluffing decisions especially consequential.

The Speculator also has a defensive option. As a counteraction, this role may block Foreign Aid, giving it a distinctive way to interfere with another player’s income while preserving the tension of Coup’s challenges and claims.

When playing with the Allegiances module from Coup: Reformation, the Embezzle action excludes the Speculator instead of the Duke. This promo therefore changes more than the role card itself when combined with that rules set.

With its gamble mechanic, Foreign Aid counteraction, and interaction with Allegiances, Coup: Speculator Promo offers a focused variation for players who want to replace the Duke with a more hazardous and unpredictable role.
