About this expansion

Gergovia is a two-player historical battle game covering Julius Caesar’s failed attempt to defeat Vercingetorix and the Gallic forces gathered at the hill fortress of Gergovia in 52 BCE.

Rather than presenting a conventional siege, Gergovia recreates a disconnected series of attacks, feints, and mistakes fought mostly below the oppidum’s walls. The Gauls occupy a fortified hilltop position, while the Romans must contend with steep, rocky approaches and terrain that does not favor straightforward linear combat.

Caesar’s forces are not without advantages. The Romans have already built two camps and a sunken trench, providing easier movement through the surrounding terrain. With multiple options and possible strategies for both sides, Gergovia is designed to be a demanding contest whether you command Rome or the Gallic defenders.

  • Recreates Caesar’s only serious loss during his eight-year campaign.
  • Features the Arverni and other Gallic contingents under Vercingetorix.
  • Includes a dedicated map and extra tribesmen counters.
  • Uses mostly counters and the rules from Caesar: Conquest of Gaul.

The Gergovia module includes one full map, one small sheet of counters, and all rules needed to play the battle as a scenario for Caesar: Conquest of Gaul. It preferably uses the second edition rules from 2006, although the original edition also works.

Designed by Richard Berg and developed by Al Ray, Gergovia offers a focused historical confrontation shaped by difficult ground, fortified defenses, and the uncertain decisions surrounding Caesar’s rare defeat.
