Battling Tops

About this board game

Battling Tops is a 1968 game for 2–4 players in which spinning tops clash inside a ring, with a typical play time of 45 minutes.

Players wind their tops and release them by pulling a string. Once the tops enter the arena, they battle one another until only one remains standing. The surviving top wins that round.

Each player takes the role of a manager, competing to build a winning record across multiple rounds. The central objective is straightforward: be the first manager to reach eight wins and become the champion.

Produced by Ideal in the late 1960s, Battling Tops centers its play on timing the release of each top and watching the arena decide the winner. Its round-based structure gives every clash a clear result before the race to eight victories continues.

An updated release, Battling Ships, appeared in 1977. It added a board around the battling arena, with edges described as being kind of like the edges of Monopoly; otherwise, it remained the same game. Battling Tops was also re-implemented by Spin to Win Game and Battling Gladiators.
