About this expansion

Carcassonne: The Watchtowers is a mini expansion for 2–6 players, adding 12 new tiles to the classic tile-laying game in a session of about 45 minutes. Released in 2016, it introduces Watchtower tiles with five different kinds of bonuses.

To use the expansion, shuffle the 12 new tiles together with the regular land tiles. When you draw a tile featuring a Watchtower, place it according to the usual rules. You may then place a meeple on the city, road, or as a farmer on that tile, but the Watchtower itself cannot be occupied by a meeple.

Watchtowers affect the scoring of completed roads and cities. If a completed feature contains a meeple on a Watchtower tile, resolve the bonus provided by the tower first, then calculate the normal points for the completed road or city.

  • 12 new tiles to shuffle into the land-tile supply
  • Five different Watchtower bonuses
  • Special bonuses are counted before normal road or city points
  • Meeples can still be placed on cities, roads, or as farmers

Farmers follow a separate rule: they do not receive any points from a Watchtower. This makes the placement and eventual scoring of meeples especially important when a new tile joins the landscape.

With its compact set of tiles and straightforward addition to the standard rules, Carcassonne: The Watchtowers gives players another way to approach completed roads and cities while remaining part of the Carcassonne series.
