About this expansion

Commands & Colors: Napoleonics Expansion #1 – The Spanish Army is a two-player expansion with a playing time of approximately 90 minutes, released in 2011. It adds 18 historical scenarios focused on battles fought by the Spanish army during the Peninsular War from 1808 to 1813.

At the time of the Napoleonic Wars, Spain was only a shadow of its former power, and Spanish troops and leaders often performed badly. Yet the Spanish armies remained a threat that French forces could not ignore, helping shape the wider conflict beyond the battlefield.

While Wellington’s Anglo-Portuguese field army could defeat only one French army at a time, Spanish armies and guerrilla warfare tied down the remainder. This pressure contributed to the Allies’ eventual victory and provides the historical setting for the expansion’s scenarios.

The battles represented here include Spanish victories and notable engagements such as Bailen, Tamames, Alcaniz, and San Marcial. Together, they highlight occasions when Spanish forces fought valiantly and gained the upper hand.
