About this expansion

Commands & Colors: Napoleonics Expansion #6 – EPIC Napoleonics is an expansion for 2–8 players with an approximately 240-minute playing time, designed for larger Napoleonic battles with more units.

This expansion introduces two game formats: the Epic Battles system and the La Grande Battles system. Although the battles are larger, the historical feel and basic rules of the Commands & Colors Napoleonics system remain mostly unchanged.

EPIC Napoleonics includes a substantial collection of scenarios and maps:

  • Six standard-sized scenarios covering key phases of the Battle of Austerlitz, fought on 2 December 1805
  • Twelve EPIC-sized engagements
  • Two La Grande Battle scenarios
  • Two double-sided mounted maps

The EPIC battlefield measures 11 hexes deep by 20 hexes wide, almost twice the area of the standard 9-by-13-hex battlefield. Placing the two maps side by side creates a La Grande battlefield measuring 11 hexes deep by 26 hexes wide.

In an EPIC game, each side’s Commander in Chief plays a Command card to order units in one battlefield section, then selects a second card from the visible Courier rack. The rack begins with five Command cards, gradually reduces to two as cards are chosen, and is then refilled. With two Command cards played each turn and only three battlefield sections, the action can become fast and furious.

To enjoy most EPIC Napoleonics scenarios, players need the Commands & Colors Napoleonics game and its Spanish, Russian, Austrian, Prussian, and Generals, Marshals and Tacticians expansions. The latter expansion’s Command and Tactician card decks are recommended for the EPIC and La Grande formats, while this expansion provides units and terrain to fill gaps.
