About this expansion

Commands & Colors: Napoleonics Expansion #3 – The Austrian Army is a two-player Coalition expansion with a playing time of about 90 minutes, released in 2013. It includes 20 historical scenarios focused on the Austrian Army’s battles against Napoleon from 1805 to 1809, along with the new units needed for these engagements.

Before the Napoleonic Wars, the Austrian Empire stretched from Italy to the Netherlands and from Poland to the Balkans. Its central position in Europe made it a frequent target of revolutionary France. Austria fought France in 1792, renewed the conflict in 1799 and 1805, and invaded Bavaria in 1809 while Napoleon’s army was occupied in Spain. Austria’s defeat at Wagram led to another humiliating peace treaty.

The Austrian army was the third largest in the world and a large multinational force. Its ranks included Austrians, Hungarians, Germans, Croats, Serbs, Poles, Russians, Ukrainians, Swedes, Englishmen, Scots, Irishmen, Walloons, and French royalists.

Its infantry regiments were large and somewhat reliable, but tactical formations and drill remained rooted in the past. Austrian cavalry was well mounted, yet its practice of scattering formations into small bodies reduced combat effectiveness. The army could achieve many successes at regimental level, while brigade, division, and corps commanders were often inadequate.
