About this expansion

Cthulhu Wars: Azathoth Expansion is a neutral expansion for 2–4 players, designed for approximately 90-minute games and released in 2015. It introduces Azathoth and four associated Monster types, each offering a distinctive way to influence the struggle.

The expansion uses a unique ownership mechanic. When you awaken Azathoth, or become the first player to summon one of the four associated Monster types, you receive that unit’s Loyal Card. The card lists the Monster’s stats and special ability, and from that point onward, only you can summon that Monster type.

  • Dimensional Shamblers
  • Star Vampire
  • Elder Thing
  • Servitor of the Outer Gods

Azathoth is an unusual Great Old One. When summoned, you choose how much Power to spend and place a special marker on your Power track. That amount determines Azathoth’s combat ability, so a greater investment makes this entity more deadly.

However, the decision is not simply about maximizing strength. A player may summon Azathoth cheaply to keep it away from another player, making the timing and cost of its arrival part of the expansion’s tension. This creates a striking choice between holding back, claiming control of a Monster type, or committing Power to a more dangerous Azathoth.

With its exclusive Loyal Cards, distinctive Monsters, and adjustable combat power, Cthulhu Wars: Azathoth Expansion adds a neutral set of summoning decisions to the game without tying these units to a single player faction.
