About this expansion

Cthulhu Wars: Dire Azathoth is an independent Great Old One expansion for 2–8 players, with a listed play time of 90 minutes and a 2019 release year.

To awaken Dire Azathoth, control a Gate in an enemy Faction’s Start Area, pay 10 Power, and place him into that Area. His combat strength is unpredictable: whenever he battles, roll a die, and his Combat rating equals the result.

Dire Azathoth’s presence can make every conflict in his Area more rewarding. With Mindless Destruction, after a battle, any Faction that battled there gains its choice of 1 Doom or 1 Power for every Unit that Faction killed or eliminated. Dire Azathoth does not need to participate in the Battle for this effect to apply.

  • Awakening cost: Control an enemy Start Area Gate and pay 10 Power.
  • Variable Combat: Roll a die to determine Dire Azathoth’s Combat rating.
  • Post-Battle reward: Choose Doom or Power for each Unit killed or eliminated in his Area.
  • Spellbook requirement: As an Action, pay 20 Power.

Unlocking the Spellbook ability reveals The Blind Idiot God, a game-ending effect. When activated, it immediately wins the game, even without all 6 Faction Spellbooks or the most Doom.

With a high awakening cost, variable combat, and a direct route to victory, Dire Azathoth adds a distinctive independent threat to Cthulhu Wars. His rules reward battles around his location while giving players a powerful alternative to the usual victory requirements.
