About this expansion

Descent: Journeys in the Dark (Second Edition) – Forgotten Souls is a cooperative adventure for 1–4 players, with games lasting around 150 minutes. It offers a fully cooperative variant of Descent, replacing the usual overlord with card-driven encounters and monsters.

Instead of competing against one player commanding the forces of evil, everyone takes the role of heroes. Together, you explore an expanding dungeon, face a series of encounters, gain experience, and collect new items while attempting to survive the growing dangers within.

The adventure is driven by an overlord track that represents the changing balance between doom and fate. A doom token and a fate token begin at opposite ends of the track, and the heroes lose if the two tokens ever meet.

  • Doom steadily advances when heroes fail encounters and through other effects.
  • Fate shifts according to the heroes’ progress, both positively and negatively.
  • When a hero is knocked out, fate advances by one.
  • Successfully completing a main encounter may allow the heroes to reset fate to its starting point.

Forgotten Souls culminates in a battle in the heart of the dragon’s lair, giving the mini-campaign a dramatic final challenge. Encounters and monsters are controlled by decks of cards, allowing the group to experience the adventure without an overlord player.

This variant does not replace the standard game of Descent; it provides another way for friends to explore its dark fantasy setting together. Forgotten Souls was originally released in the 2014 Season One Game Night Kit, which included accessories such as a poster, play mats, acrylic tokens, and translucent dice. The retail edition uses an online PDF rulebook that players must reference or print.
