About this board game

Fjords is a tactical two-player board game, playable in about 30 minutes, in which rival Viking clan leaders compete for the most fruitful land along Norway’s coast.

Set during the Viking Age, between the 8th and 11th centuries, the game follows two clans fighting for control of a valuable region. Each leader must use the right tactics to secure a larger portion of the land for their clan.

Fjords unfolds across two distinct phases:

• Tile and farm placement: Players develop the landscape by placing tiles and farms. This phase combines luck and skill as the region takes shape.
• Field claiming: Players compete to claim the available fields. The enclosure dynamic is reminiscent of Go, making this phase a test of pure skill.

Strategic positioning is central to the contest. Villages are built at important locations, while every decision helps determine which clan can control the larger share of the region. Players must think ahead as the landscape develops and opportunities for expansion become more limited.

With its blend of evolving tile placement and a highly tactical claiming phase, Fjords offers a compact battle of territory and timing. The first phase introduces uncertainty through the mix of luck and skill; the second rewards careful planning and precise play.

Released in 2005, Fjords presents a focused Viking conflict for 1–2 players. Whether shaping the land or enclosing fields, each clan leader is fighting for one decisive prize: the best land along Norway’s coast.
