About this board game

GRUNN: Pioniers in de Provincie is a family-friendly landscape-building game for 1–6 players, with a play time of about 60 minutes. In it, you create your own version of Groningen, the northern province of the Netherlands.

Gameplay centers on optimizing a landscape puzzle. Each type of landscape tile scores victory points in a different way, so the choices you make while developing your province shape your final result. Turn over tiles to expand the landscape, generate income, and gain opportunities to construct buildings for even more victory points.

Although GRUNN is designed primarily to entertain, its landscapes and their development are grounded in the history of Groningen. The name “GRUNN” comes from the local dialect, as spoken in the province, adding a regional touch to the game’s theme.

The game is also connected to the province’s museums. It is available selectively in retail and at 31 participating museums throughout Groningen, with each museum offering a unique scenario card that adds a fun extra twist to play.

  • Use one scenario card or combine multiple cards during a game.
  • Combined scenario cards must have different colors.
  • Scenario cards of the same color cannot be used together.

Many scenarios are linked to the museum that offers them and to its location within the surrounding landscape. This gives GRUNN: Pioniers in de Provincie an extra way to explore Groningen while creating a distinct version of the province at the table.
