About this board game
Kingdom Builder: Family Box is a variable-board strategy game for 2–5 players, with games lasting about 45 minutes. Players build settlements across changing terrain, seeking to create the kingdom that earns the most gold.
Each turn, a player reveals a terrain card and builds three settlements on matching hexes. When possible, a new settlement must be placed next to one of that player’s existing settlements, creating an ongoing challenge as the kingdom grows and available spaces change.
The board features nine different kinds of terrain, along with locations and castles. Building beside a location lets a player take an extra action tile, which can be used from the following turn. These actions can provide unusual advantages, including the ability to move settlements.
Settlements next to castles earn gold at the end of the game, but the main scoring opportunities come from the three Kingdom Builder cards in play. Chosen from a total of ten, these cards define the conditions for earning gold in each game.
- Score through settlements built beside water hexes or by meeting other Kingdom Builder card conditions.
- Compete for the majority of settlements in a sector of the board.
- Adapt to a random combination of Kingdom Builder cards, special actions, and terrain sectors.
The Family Box includes the base game, the Nomads expansion, materials for a fifth player, and two Queenies: The Caves and The Capitol. With its changing map and varied scoring goals, Kingdom Builder: Family Box offers a different kingdom-building puzzle each time you play.
