About this expansion

Mansions of Madness: The Laboratory is a 2013 adventure game for 2–5 players, with an approximate play time of 180 minutes. Inspired by H.P. Lovecraft’s short story From Beyond, it challenges players to explore Crawford Tillinghast’s mansion and laboratory before his strange machine merges our world with another dimension.

Two months after a furious argument, Tillinghast remains isolated from his former friend. His fanatical research has led to an arcane device with terrifying consequences, and the investigators must uncover what happened inside his home. The mansion holds both the clues needed to deactivate the machine and the otherworldly threats drawn through its portals.

The Laboratory is a free-form adventure built around exploration, discovery, and mounting supernatural danger. As players search Tillinghast’s home, they must contend with portals to other realms and the horrors that emerge from them. Survival depends on finding the information required to shut down the device before the boundary between worlds is broken.

  • Explore Crawford Tillinghast’s mansion and laboratory.
  • Search for clues that reveal how to deactivate the arcane machine.
  • Close portals leading to other realms.
  • Face eerie terrors inspired by Lovecraft’s mythos and From Beyond.

Designed by Samuel Bailey and Richard Launius, the creator of Arkham Horror, this scenario is filled with the themes and mechanics associated with Mansions of Madness. Its free-form structure creates a rich supernatural investigation, while the machine and its dimensional threat give the adventure a clear and urgent objective.
