About this expansion

Race for the Galaxy: The Gathering Storm is the first expansion for Race for the Galaxy, supporting 1–5 players with a play time of about 60 minutes. Released in 2008, it adds new cards, competitive goals, a fifth-player option, solitaire rules, and an alternative drafting format.

The expansion introduces new ways to shape each game. First Goals reward the first player to achieve a specified objective with 3 extra victory points, while Most Goals reward the player with the most developments, military worlds, or certain types of worlds.

  • Four new start worlds
  • Three 6-cost developments, two other new developments, and one duplicate development
  • Five military worlds and six non-military worlds, including a replacement gambling world
  • An extra set of player cards and victory point chips for a fifth player
  • A robot template, dice, and chits for solitaire play
  • Drafting rules for two- or three-player games

The additional cards broaden the available selection of start worlds, developments, and worlds, while the goals create objectives to compete over during play. The extra player materials allow a fifth participant to join the game, extending the player count beyond the base game.

For solo players, the included robot template, dice, and chits provide the components needed for the solitaire rules. Players looking for a different experience with two or three participants can also use the drafting rules to change how cards are selected.

The Gathering Storm also includes blank cards for creating custom cards. Whether adding a fifth player, competing over goals, trying solitaire play, or experimenting with drafting, this expansion offers several official ways to extend Race for the Galaxy.
