About this expansion
Railways of Europe is a 2008 expansion for Railways of the World that supports 2–5 players and plays in approximately 120 minutes. It brings the railway-building game to a European setting with a new map and card deck.
Designed by Glenn Drover, one of the two designers of the original game, this expansion uses the original game’s pieces, tiles, money, trains, shares, and rules. It provides a new setting while retaining the core materials and systems associated with Railways of the World.
To reflect its European setting, Railways of Europe also introduces changes and additions to the rules. These adjustments work alongside the new map and cards, creating an expansion experience distinct from the original game’s setting.
- European setting and map
- New card deck
- Uses the original game’s components, money, trains, shares, and rules
- Additional and modified rules suited to the new setting
The expansion has an unusual publishing history. It was originally an official but unlicensed expansion of Railroad Tycoon, designed by the original game’s designer and intended for publication by a company that was, in some sense, a descendant of Eagle Games.
Its unlicensed status came from not using the Railroad Tycoon name, which had been licensed from Sid Meier’s computer game. Its connection to Railways of the World is more official, although the expansion existed before that base game was published.
