About this expansion

Age of Steam Expansion: Amazon Rainforest & Sahara Desert is a full-size, full-color mounted expansion for 3–6 players, with games lasting about 120 minutes. It introduces two dramatically different maps for Age of Steam and Steam, each built around a distinctive strategic challenge.

On Amazon Rainforest, railroads spread through the Brazilian forests between a small number of scattered cities. There are no towns on this map, and no way to add them. Instead, income is tied to the wood market: each colored cube represents a prized and scarce type of South American wood, and supply affects its value.

  • Delivering more wood makes that supply scarcer and drives its price up.
  • Having less wood on the board makes it cheaper.
  • With few cities available, the track network you build is critical.
  • Amazon Rainforest supports 3–6 players.

Sahara Desert moves the action to northern Africa, where building a railroad network means coping with an unforgiving climate. Water comes from oases across the desert, but once an oasis dries up, it stays dry. Players without access to water can pay for each delivery or choose the Water Import action to avoid worrying about water for that turn.

Sahara Desert supports 3–5 players and places a sharp focus on location, access, and survival. With its fluctuating wood prices and the Sahara’s dwindling water supplies, Age of Steam Expansion: Amazon Rainforest & Sahara Desert offers two contrasting ways to rethink your railroad strategy.
