About this expansion

Age of Steam Expansion: Portugal is a 3–4-player map expansion that brings the original game’s railway and shipping rules to mainland Portugal, Madeira, and the Azores. The map is designed for three or four players and can also be played with the rules from Steam.

Portugal’s Atlantic coastline stretches for more than 600 kilometers, making sea routes important to the development of industry. The mainland is also a crucial geographical presence for Madeira and the Azores, whose exports are directed toward the continent.

The defining feature of this map is Lisbon’s central position. Companies can link Lisbon to almost all cities on the map, so the game usually grows outward from the capital. This creates a distinctive focus on building connections through one highly important location.

  • Designed for 3–4 players
  • Land and sea routes both contribute to the map
  • Lisbon serves as the central connection point
  • Each player may make only one connection to Lisbon per turn

The Lisbon restriction applies whether the connection is made by land or by sea. Along with Oporto, Lisbon becomes one of the most important links on the map, giving every turn a clear constraint as players develop their networks.

Portugal’s sea routes also reflect the importance of tourism and goods to the islands, as well as their luxury products and high-quality exports reaching the continent. With its blend of mainland links, island connections, and a tightly limited route into Lisbon, Age of Steam Expansion: Portugal offers a focused map variation built around geography and access.
