About this board game

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring is a two-player miniature battle game with an average play time of 90 minutes, released in 2001. Choose the forces of Good or Evil and recreate memorable battles across Middle-earth.

Designed as a smaller, simpler, and more random experience than Games Workshop’s Warhammer series, the game focuses on battles fought with detailed miniatures and scenery. It is described as more of a hobby than a traditional board game, with Games Workshop supporting it through a wide miniature range and a large set of expansions.

Combat uses straightforward six-sided dice. Battles are resolved by rolling D6s, with the highest roll winning. Individual statistics are used only to decide ties, keeping the core resolution system easy to follow while preserving a distinction between different forces.

The boxed game provides the essential materials for starting a battle:

  • One 128-page, full-color rulebook
  • Forty-eight highly detailed plastic miniatures
  • Eight Men of Gondor
  • Sixteen High Elf Warriors
  • Twenty-four Moria Goblins with various evil implements of destruction
  • Ruined building scenery and enough six-sided dice to begin playing

The Fellowship of the Ring can be expanded through its connection with The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. The system was later re-implemented by The Lord of the Rings: Strategy Battle Game, making this set part of a broader Games Workshop range for fans of miniature warfare and Middle-earth battles.
