About this board game

Ogre is a tactical ground combat game for 1–3 players, with games lasting about 45 minutes. Set in 2085 A.D., it portrays a future where armored warfare is faster and deadlier than ever.

Hovercraft, tanks, and infantry clash across the battlefield, while tactical nuclear devices add to the danger. Yet the most feared weapon needs no human guidance: the OGRE, a giant cybernetic tank.

In the basic game, one player commands a force of infantry and armor along with a command post that must be defended. The opposing player has only a single unit—but it is an OGRE. Despite this dramatic difference, the matchup is designed as an even contest.

  • One side controls infantry, armor, and a command post.
  • The opposing side commands one giant cybernetic tank.
  • Advanced games support solitaire and multiplayer action.
  • Advanced scenarios can feature OGREs on both sides.

As Microgame #1 in the Metagaming Microgames series, Ogre is the original release of the game and the origin of the Ogre / G.E.V. line. Its focused tactical premise makes the battlefield easy to understand: defend the command post, or break through with the feared machine.

The related GURPS Ogre entry expands the setting with character and vehicle descriptions, a future timeline, discussion of the world of the Ogres, and an Armor Unit Combat System for quickly resolving battles involving player characters during roleplaying.
