About this expansion

Carcassonne: The Peasant Revolts is a mini-expansion for the Carcassonne basic game, adding a tense protection mechanism for 2–6 players. It introduces 12 new land tiles that can trigger revolts against meeples occupying cities, roads, or monasteries.

Before play, three revolt tiles are removed unseen, while the remaining nine are shuffled into the other land tiles. Whenever a revolt tile is drawn, its revolt symbol determines which type of feature is affected. Unprotected meeples on those features must immediately return to their owners’ supplies, while protected meeples remain in place and score 2 points each.

The revolt can move from player to player. If one player has no affected unprotected meeples, the next player to the left checks their features. This continues until the revolt removes at least one meeple or no players are affected, creating opportunities for both protection and surprise.

  • 12 new land tiles: five city tiles, four road tiles, and three monastery tiles.
  • Protection choices: spend 4 points to protect a meeple just placed, or 2 points to protect one already on the landscape when you do not place a meeple.
  • Revolt scoring: protected meeples on affected features score 2 points each when checked.

Protected meeples are placed lying down and are treated normally when their feature is scored. After scoring, they return to their owners’ supplies and lose their protection. Farmers cannot be protected and are never affected by peasant revolts.

With its clipped city buildings and shifting threat, Carcassonne: The Peasant Revolts adds a distinctive risk-and-reward decision to the familiar tile-laying game. It can be combined with other expansions, although no official combination rules are provided.
