About this board game

A Game of Thrones: The Card Game (Second Edition) is a strategy card game for 2–4 players, with games lasting about 120 minutes. Set in the world of A Song of Ice and Fire, it casts players as leaders of warring factions competing for influence over the Iron Throne.

Each player commands two decks: a randomly shuffled draw deck and a seven-card plot deck. The draw deck contains characters, locations, attachments, and events, letting you call on figures such as Tywin Lannister, Robb Stark, Daenerys Targaryen, Stannis Baratheon, and The Red Viper. You can also muster forces around iconic locations or equip characters with legendary weapons.

At the start of every round, players simultaneously reveal a plot. Your choice determines your available gold, initiative, challenge strength, and hand reserve, while some plots create powerful effects for the round. You might unleash a devastating wildfire assault or call on the Faith of the Seven as you shape the struggle to come.

  • Joust: compete against one opponent in a direct contest.
  • Melee: enter a battle involving three or more players.
  • Challenges: fight through military conflict, back-alley intrigue, and political power struggles.

Winning challenges earns power, and the first player to reach fifteen power claims victory. The second edition streamlines the original design with revised timing rules, updated keywords, new factions, expanded deck-building options, and more focused plot-deck construction.

With simultaneous plot selection and constant decisions about characters, allies, locations, and events, A Game of Thrones: The Card Game brings the shifting alliances and ruthless competition of Westeros to the tabletop.
