About this expansion

Hollow Legions: ASL Module 7 is a two-player World War II tactical wargame module with an approximate playing time of 120 minutes, released in 1989. It adds the Italian forces of the Second World War to the Squad Leader/Advanced Squad Leader systems.

Based on extensive research, the module presents a complete Italian order of battle, allowing players to command major vehicle, gun, and troop types used in North and East Africa, Russia, Sicily, the Balkans, and Italy. It also examines how equipment quality and small-unit leadership affected the performance of Italian soldiers.

Hollow Legions includes eight scenarios, with settings ranging from North African desert battles to European engagements. Five scenarios take place in Europe, while the two included mapboards, numbered 30 and 31, depict open desert. Used with the boards from West of Alamein, they support North African battles on an even larger scale.

  • Two mapboards: 30 and 31
  • Three countersheets
  • Italian Chapter H vehicle and weapon listings
  • Point values, historical notes, and Design Your Own charts
  • Chapter N Armory pages for the included counters, Allied and Axis Minor infantry and support weapons, and British ordnance and transport

The scenario selection includes The Taking of Takrouna, Too Little, Too Late, A High Price to Pay, Bridge to Nowhere, Retribution, Half a Chance, The Battle for Rome, and Ci Arrendiamo.

This first and second edition module offers a focused way to explore Italy’s wartime forces within ASL, combining detailed reference material, new counters, desert maps, and battles across several theaters. Play Hollow Legions to form your own view of the Italian soldier’s capabilities and circumstances.
