This War of Mine: Orphans is a thematic expansion for 1–6 players, with an approximate play time of 120 minutes, released in 2017. It adds children to the original experience, bringing a vulnerable new dimension to life during war.

Children do not fully understand the seriousness of the events around them. They continue living in their own small worlds, while the adults must work to keep them safe and fed. Protecting them becomes a central responsibility and makes an already difficult situation even more demanding.

This expansion raises the difficulty level by adding a family that offers little help with scavenging or building, yet requires care and protection. Its focus goes beyond the broad idea of civilians, highlighting the distinct challenges of looking after children in a war-torn environment.

• 30 additional story snippets for the book of scripts, dedicated to children

The child cards add variety by giving each child special characteristics whenever one is drawn at random. Meanwhile, the new story snippets expand the narrative material and bring more child-focused situations into the experience.
