About this expansion

West of Alamein: ASL Module 5 is a two-player Advanced Squad Leader module with a 120-minute play time, focused on battles between the British 8th Army and the Deutsches Afrika Korps in North Africa from 1941 to 1943.

The module contains the complete British order of battle, including U.S. Lend-Lease vehicles, ordnance, and support weapons. This provides the major vehicle, gun, and troop types used by British and Commonwealth forces throughout the war.

Included is Chapter F of the ASL rules, covering arid-region terrain such as scrub, wadis, hillocks, escarpments, soft sand, dunes, deirs, and hammada. It also introduces desert combat conditions including dust, heat haze, and sun blindness.

Five mounted mapboards expand the setting. Four depict open desert with dominant features represented by movable overlays, while board 25 portrays a rugged Tunisian hill mass and can be converted into a large escarpment with the included overlay. A design-your-own system supports random overlay selection and placement, with vehicle and weapon point values, historical notes, and DYO charts for creating varied situations.

  • Five mounted mapboards numbered 25–29
  • 520 half-inch and 704 five-eighths-inch counters
  • Terrain overlays plus a dedicated escarpment overlay
  • Eight ASL scenarios, numbered 35–42
  • Rules for adapting the desert boards and overlays to the steppes of Ukraine

The scenarios range from Blazin’ Chariots and Rachi Ridge to Point of No Return. Four can be played with ASL and Beyond Valor; the other four also require Yanks. West of Alamein is not a complete game: ASL and Beyond Valor are required, with Yanks needed for four scenarios.
