About this expansion

Arkham Horror: The Dark Pharaoh (Herald) is an official Herald for Arkham Horror, designed for 1–8 players with a listed play time of 180 minutes. Released in 2006, it adds the Dark Pharaoh to games using the Herald / Guardian mechanic.

At the start of the game, place the Dark Pharaoh monster token in the monster cup, even if Nyarlathotep is not the Ancient One. His presence makes valuable discoveries dangerous and gives investigators additional reasons to fear the forces gathering in Arkham.

  • Know O’ Thief: Whenever an investigator gains a Unique item, including starting equipment, that investigator loses 1 sanity.
  • These Things Are Mine: Whenever an investigator gains an Exhibit item, roll a die. On a failure, that investigator becomes Cursed.
  • Blood Will Boil: At the start of Upkeep, before rolling for Curses, each Cursed investigator loses 1 stamina.

The Dark Pharaoh also reveals his other faces through the Mask monsters. Every Mask gains 1 toughness, and defeating one adds a Doom token to the Ancient One’s Doom track. This makes each encounter with a Mask potentially costly, even after the monster is defeated.

His true glory matters especially when Nyarlathotep is the Ancient One. If Nyarlathotep awakens, his combat modifier increases by 1 for each Mask monster on the board, while one additional Doom token is placed on his Doom track for each of those Masks. In this way, the board’s remaining Masks directly strengthen the final threat.

The Dark Pharaoh is a focused Herald effect built around Unique items, Exhibit items, Curses, Masks, and Doom. Use it to bring these official rules into your Arkham Horror game.
