About this expansion

Carcassonne: Castles in Germany is a mini-expansion for 2–6 players that adds six double-sized German castle tiles to a game of Carcassonne, with a play time of about 45 minutes.

At the start of the game, each player receives one castle tile in a 4–6 player game, or two castle tiles in a 2–3 player game. During play, a player may choose to place one of these tiles instead of the regular tile in hand. As usual, the tile parts must match the surrounding features.

When placing a castle tile, the player may also place a follower somewhere on it. A follower placed in the main castle creates a special scoring opportunity: the castle scores like a cloister and is worth 12 points when completely surrounded.

  • Six double-sized tiles depicting German castles
  • Castle tiles may replace a regular tile during a turn
  • Main castles score 12 points when completely surrounded
  • Completed cities and roads gain 3 additional points when part of the structure is on a castle tile

The castle tiles also affect completed cities and roads. If a city or road completed during the game includes part of a castle tile, that structure is worth 3 additional points, regardless of who placed the castle tile. This makes each castle a potential source of extra value for any player.

Carcassonne: Castles in Germany offers new placement decisions without changing the central tile-matching foundation of Carcassonne. Released in 2015, it is part of the Carcassonne series and gives players another way to shape the landscape while pursuing bonus scoring opportunities.
