About this expansion

Carcassonne: Die Katharer is a four-tile expansion for Carcassonne for 2–6 players, with a playing time of about 60 minutes.

The expansion introduces tiles that allow players to lay siege to a city. When a besieged city is completed, it provides only 1 point per tile, or 2 points per tile if the city includes a cathedral. This changes the value of a city under siege and gives the feature a distinct scoring rule.

The siege also affects peasants. Peasants supply both the city and its besiegers, so every completed besieged city counts twice for them. The result is a compact addition that links city completion with a separate scoring opportunity for peasants.

  • Four tiles featuring the siege mechanism
  • Completed besieged cities score 1 point per tile
  • A cathedral raises the score to 2 points per tile
  • Completed besieged cities count twice for peasants

The original Die Katharer tiles, illustrated by Doris Matthäus, were released exclusively through the German magazine Spielbox in issue 5/2004 and later in the August 2005 Der Carcassonne Almanach. The siege was re-released by Rio Grande Games in October 2008 as part of the mini compilation Cult, Siege & Creativity, with new artwork.

A six-tile version, Die Belagerer, appeared in the 2013 Carcassonne Müller Exklusiv-Edition and is also available through Cundco. Carcassonne: Die Katharer is part of the Carcassonne series.
