About this expansion

Carcassonne: Sheep & Shepherds is a 2014 expansion for 2-6 players, adding hills, vineyards, shepherds, sheep, and wolves to the classic tile-laying game. With a play time of around 40 minutes, it keeps the goal of basic Carcassonne: claim the most points to win.

New hill tiles are placed on top of randomly drawn tiles, raising them above the playing surface. A follower standing on a hill can break a shared majority tie: when players occupy the same feature equally, the tied player with a follower on a hill tile scores all the points for that feature.

Vineyards make monasteries more valuable. Every vineyard tile around a monastery adds three points to its score, but only if that monastery is completed. This creates an extra reason to interfere with opponents’ unfinished monasteries and prevent them from collecting their bonuses.

Shepherds introduce a push-your-luck decision to the fields. A shepherd can be placed only in a field, and whenever that field expands, its owner chooses whether to draw a sheep token or trade in all accumulated sheep for points.

  • Sheep tokens are worth 1-4 points, based on the number of sheep shown.
  • Two wolf tokens are hidden among the sheep tokens.
  • Drawing a wolf sends all of that player’s sheep back to the bag.

In Carcassonne: Sheep & Shepherds, players must decide when a growing flock is worth the risk. Cash in too early and valuable points may be missed; keep drawing and a wolf could erase everything. Part of the Carcassonne series.
