About this expansion

Carcassonne: Towers & Thieves is a major expansion for 2–6 players, adding tower segments and new actions to Carcassonne in a 60-minute game.

On a turn, instead of placing a Meeple as usual, a player may place a tower segment on a tile with a tower space, add a segment to an existing tower, or place a Meeple on top of a tower to finish it. These options add new ways to use a turn while expanding the familiar game.

Placing a tower segment lets its owner attempt to capture other players’ Meeples. A tower can see in an orthogonal direction, and its height determines how far its reach extends: a one-segment tower can target Meeples within one tile, while a two-segment tower reaches two tiles. Taller towers extend this distance accordingly.

  • Place a tower segment on a suitable tile.
  • Build upward on a tower already in play.
  • Finish a tower by placing a Meeple on top.
  • Capture opposing Meeples within the tower’s orthogonal range.

A captured Meeple is removed along with any opportunity to score with it. Its owner must also pay 3 victory points if they want to free the Meeple, making tower placement a direct way to pressure opponents and influence their available scoring pieces.

Released in 2006, Carcassonne: Towers & Thieves brings a distinct tower-building and Meeple-capturing layer to the Carcassonne series. The expansion’s new actions create additional decisions around when to build, when to finish a tower, and how to respond when a Meeple comes within range.
