About this expansion

Railroad Tiles: Desert Expansion is a route-building expansion for 1–4 players, with games lasting about 30 minutes. Create a desert beside your regular tiles, connect its attractions to your network, and use camels to bring visitors to the sights.

The expansion introduces four types of Desert Attractions: Oases, Pyramids, Sphinxes, and Obelisks. Desert tiles also feature Desert Trails, which can connect to both Highways and Railways. When these routes meet, place a Desert Station on the joining point to mark the connection.

A special placement rule shapes the growing landscape. The first Desert tile may be placed freely, but every tile placed afterward—regular or Desert—must have at least one side connected to a tile of the same kind. This rule encourages careful planning as your regular network and desert area expand together.

  • Desert tiles: Include Car and Traveler pin points, plus Camel pin points instead of Train pin points.
  • Camels: Use a Train Placement token to place one on a Camel pin point, scoring 1 point for each Desert Station it connects to.
  • Attraction sets: Score 1 point for one different attraction, 3 for two, 6 for three, and 10 for a complete set of four.
  • Objectives: Pursue goals such as connecting the Desert Market to at least five Desert Trail segments or surrounding the Great Oasis with at least four Desert tiles.

Attractions must be connected to at least one Desert Station to count toward end-game sets, and the same attraction cannot belong to multiple sets. The Great Oasis also counts as an Oasis Attraction, giving this objective an additional scoring role.

With its new placement constraint, dual-purpose Desert Trails, and set-collection opportunities, Railroad Tiles: Desert Expansion adds a distinctive desert challenge to your route-building plans.
