About this expansion

Beyond Valor: ASL Module 1 is a two-player Advanced Squad Leader module released in 1985, with an approximate play time of 120 minutes. Paired with the ASL Rulebook, it delivers a substantial collection of forces, maps, markers, fortifications, and scenarios in one box.

The module contains the German and Russian orders of battle covering 1939–1945, along with three different squad types of Finnish troops. It also provides the necessary markers and fortifications required by the ASL series, supporting a wide range of game situations and design possibilities.

Beyond Valor includes scenarios set across the Eastern Front and Northern Europe, from the Winter War and the opening years of World War II through the battles of 1945. The settings include Finland, Poland, Russia, Germany, Lithuania, and Latvia, with locations such as Stalingrad, Warsaw, Brest-Litovsk, Leningrad, and Berlin.

  • Boards 1–5 and 8 in the third edition, plus Boards 20–23 in all editions
  • Four six-sided dice
  • Scenarios 1–10 in all editions
  • Scenarios 123–136 in the third edition

The scenario selection includes engagements such as Fighting Withdrawal, The Commissar’s House, Dash for the Bridge, and The Citadel. The third edition adds fourteen further scenarios, including The Borders are Burning, Land Leviathans, Counterattack on the Vistula, and The Agony of Doom.

Edition contents vary: the second edition also includes the complete Red Barricades historical module material, while the third edition includes additional boards, counters, and scenarios. With its broad orders of battle and extensive component set, Beyond Valor offers many possibilities for ASL play and do-it-yourself scenarios.
