About this expansion

Japan (fan expansion for Age of Steam) is a free print-and-play expansion for 3–4 players, with an approximate play time of 120 minutes. Released in 2005, it introduces a Japan map designed for use with the Age of Steam base game.

This map emphasizes difficult and expensive construction. Japan features high terrain building costs, including many mountains, so route planning and the timing of track construction are especially important. Water hexes add another obstacle, but they can be crossed by building bridges for a cost of $6.

The expansion also changes how several actions function. The Locomotive action is deliberately underpowered compared with a lasting improvement: it provides only a temporary +1 link bump, and that bonus applies only during the turn in which the action is selected.

Urbanization has an additional cost on this map. Its city upgrade counts as one of a player’s track builds, creating another construction trade-off as players decide how to spend their available building opportunities.

Japan offers a demanding Age of Steam map centered on costly terrain, limited construction choices, and carefully timed actions. Its combination of mountain-heavy terrain, bridge costs, and adjusted action effects makes this fan expansion a distinctive challenge for players seeking a more demanding route-building experience.
