About this expansion

Age of Steam Expansion: Mexico, Spain/Portugal is a 2007 expansion for Age of Steam for 3–6 players, with games lasting around 120 minutes.

This second set of Age of Steam expansions was designed by the Steambrothers. It introduces two new settings—Mexico and Spain/Portugal—along with additional actions and mechanisms that change how the base game is played.

On the Spain/Portugal map, team play is the main new feature. A variant also allows players to experience the map individually. The map adds rules concerning the difference in gauge between Spain and the rest of Europe, creating a distinct rules framework for this setting.

  • Team play: The Spain/Portugal map centers on playing as teams.
  • Individual variant: Spain/Portugal can also be played without teams.
  • Gauge rules: Spain’s gauge differs from that of the rest of Europe.
  • Insurrection: A new action for the Spain/Portugal map.
  • Nationalization: A Mexico action involving the nationalization of a player’s track.

The Mexico map features the special action called Nationalization. Thematically, this involves a player track being nationalized, and the action adds significant interaction between players.

With its regional rules, alternative team format, and new actions, Age of Steam Expansion: Mexico, Spain/Portugal offers new ways to experience the established Age of Steam system. It expands the original game with fresh mechanisms while keeping the focus on the distinctive map-based play of the series.
