About this expansion

Carcassonne: The Flying Machines is a small expansion for the Carcassonne series, supporting 2–6 players and released in 2012. It adds eight landscape tiles showing a pair of wings to the tiles used during the game.

When a player draws a winged tile, they place it according to the normal rules. They may then either place a follower on that tile as usual or attempt to fly a new follower to a nearby tile.

The wings’ orientation determines the direction of flight, while a die roll determines the distance: 1, 2, or 3 tiles. If a tile exists at the destination, the flying follower can be placed on any unfinished, non-field location there, including a feature that is already occupied.

  • Adds eight winged landscape tiles to the game.
  • Uses wing orientation to determine a follower’s flight direction.
  • Uses a die roll to determine a flight distance of 1–3 tiles.
  • Allows placement on an unfinished, non-field feature, whether occupied or not.

Flight is not guaranteed to succeed. If there is no tile at the destination, or if all the non-field features there are complete, the player places no follower that turn. Crash!

With its unusual movement option and uncertain destination, Carcassonne: The Flying Machines introduces a distinct way to use followers while preserving the familiar tile-placement framework.
