About this expansion

Railways of Portugal is a strategic railway board game for 2–4 players, with games lasting about 120 minutes. Designed by Vital Lacerda, it challenges players to plan and lay track, upgrade their trains, sell goods to other cities, and use operation cards to build the richest railway empire in Portugal.

Portugal’s map is tight, with cities positioned close together. This creates significant player interaction and makes every route an important decision. Foreseeing your competitors’ moves while carefully developing your own network is essential to establishing an undisputed railroad empire.

Financial management is just as important as expansion. Players must balance their budgets and consider how many bank bonds to take, since excessive borrowing can damage a business over the course of the game. Careful planning can be the difference between a thriving railway and a ruined enterprise.

The map also introduces offshore islands that receive more goods as the game progresses. Reaching them requires spending money on Maritime Connections, creating a longer-term investment for players willing to pay for access. There are no black cities on the board at the beginning; they can be added at the start of the Industrial Age and through Urbanization.

  • Major Lines require intermediate connections, adding another layer to route planning.
  • New operation cards introduce Government Subsidies, State Treasury Shares, Maritime State Support, and Public-Private Partnerships.
  • Goal Cards replace Baron Cards, giving players new objectives to pursue.

With its close cities, evolving island opportunities, demanding finances, and new operations, Railways of Portugal offers a focused and interactive addition to the Railways of the World series.
