About this expansion

Carcassonne: Klöster in Deutschland is a mini-expansion for 2–6 players that adds six illustrated German monastery tiles to the Carcassonne base game, with play lasting about 45 minutes. First published for Easter 2014, it offers a new way to use monastery spaces while preserving the familiar tile-laying setting.

This expansion replaces the monastery tiles in the base game with tiles inspired by particular German monasteries. Each of the six new illustrations gives the landscape a distinct historical theme while using the same expansion rules.

  • Kloster Andechs
  • Eberbach
  • Lorch
  • Kloster Maria Laach
  • Kloster Marienthal
  • Maulbronn

When you place one of these tiles, you may place a monk on it as usual. The monk is scored and removed when the monastery tile becomes surrounded by eight other tiles. Alternatively, you can lay the figure on its side to mark it as an abbot.

Abbots remain on their monastery until the end of the game. At that point, each abbot scores one point for the monastery itself, plus one point for every tile connected to the monastery in rows and columns leading away from it. This creates a different scoring timeline from the standard monk option.

Carcassonne: Klöster in Deutschland is one of several versions of this expansion. Dutch and Japanese monastery editions use different artwork, but the rules do not change; this edition focuses on German monasteries.
