About this expansion

Carcassonne: The River is a mini-expansion for 2–5 players that adds twelve river tiles to a game of Carcassonne, with an approximate play time of 45 minutes.

The river tiles are placed at the beginning of the game, creating the opening sequence before regular play starts. Once all twelve tiles have been placed, the game continues as normal.

All the familiar landscape elements of Carcassonne are also present on these tiles. This makes The River a straightforward addition for players who want to extend the start of the basic game while keeping its recognizable landscape-building experience.

Because followers cannot be placed on the river, the expansion does not change scoring. Instead, its rules focus on how the game begins: players work through the river tiles first, then proceed with the standard game.
